CURRENT LAW

Summary:

This law is a Licensure with Exclusive Scope of Practice. You must have a license to provide nutrition care. This law licenses dietitians and nutritionists in a two-tier system. Licensed dietitians are permitted to full therapeutic nutrition care services including assessment, counseling and evaluation. Nutritionists can be licensed to provide “general nutrition services” only, which excludes therapeutic nutrition care.  "General nutrition services" means the counseling of individuals or groups in the selection of food to meet normal nutritional needs, and the assessment of nutritional needs of individuals or groups by planning, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating the nutritional components of community health services. Licensure also gives you the right to use the titles “licensed dietitian,” "licensed registered dietitian," “licensed nutritionist,” “dietitian” or “nutritionist” and the corresponding abbreviations. This law does not apply to those licensed in medicine, nursing, pharmacy or dentistry following the standards of their profession, but they may not used the titles “licensed registered dietitian” or “licensed nutritionist” unless they are also licensed as such.
